Re: What weight outfit for redz?

Dogster, I can answer that for you. Most people choose an 8 wt. because of it's overall versatility, some people choose a 6 wt. just for the fun of it, I use a 9 and a 10 wt. because I like throwing heavier flies, and when its really windy outside. So, as you can see, it depends. Send me an IM and I'll give you my number. I have several different weight outfits I'll let you try out. You can take them with you to try on the water. That way, you can decide what will fit your needs best.

I want to know what kinda rod you need to catch big tarpon, bonito, and maybe a cobia or something. I need lessons, so where do I learn?

Re: What weight outfit for tarpon?

For big tarpon a 10 wt. is minimum, I recommend a 12 wt. for them. For the cobia and bonito, a 10 wt. is fine. The person to really talk to re: fly fishing for these animals is John Botko of the Salty Feather. He can arrange evrything, including lessons and trips.

Tarpon fishing on fly is a little different up here than in S. Florida and the Keys. Up here the fish figt much, much deeper...sorta like a heavyweight boxing match vs. a shallow water jumping contest. You will need a fly rod that has a lot of lifting power...meaning one that is a poor casting rod.

Personally, I prefer a 10 wt. for everything up here, including redfish and trout. The reason is I can throw larger, bulkier flies with a 10 wt., which is what I prefer fishing with. Particulary the larger topwater poppers. That is just me. Most guys fishing for reds and trout use pretty light rods...7 - 8 wt for them. Plus, when fly fishing in the wind, a 10 wt. really punches into it, as opposed to a little 7-8 wt. outfit.

Good luck!

Regards,
Capt. Jack

Ok Jack, I nominate you to give us all a fly fishing lesson by holding a Fish-Tails fly fishing clinic! I'm sure everyone else will nominate you too.

Something I've always wanted to try.

Whenever you are ready. I've got outfits to practice with from 10 wt, down to 5 wt.

Just let me know.

It hasn't materialized. I saw an episode of what you're talking about. I believe it was the spanish fly, Jose Wejebe http://www.spanishflytv.com/
