When Pompano?
|
|
When is the best time that the Pompano come through NE Florida/Fernandina? Is it around this time or has it already passed. Best tide/time of day? Any thoughts guys?
Thanks for any posts, Tim

Early morning half way up incoming tide as they forage for food in the waves. Not sure how far up the coast they are right now on their way north. Should be here about now, along with a billion bluefish.
Sometimes the pompano pass by Jacksonville swimming straight north offshore if the water is too dirty.

It's do-able when they don't bypass Jacksonville on their way North. Here are some nice Nassau Sound pompano I caught a few years back during a good season with cold, clean water.

My son got one pompano Sunday, just north of the exposed rocks off the beach , south end of Amelia. They are our " drug of choice" but are pretty scarce in these waters.I prefer fresh clam for bait, but I think he got this one on dead shrimp bits.Cant wait to get back down for a few days now that I know they are around. Pompano are a member of the jack family I believe. I bleed my pompano thoroughly and ice immediatley.
They also are very oily. You can feel the oil on your hands after cleaning one. That oil means that they don't keep well. So, I try to eat them within 2-3 days, leaving them whole (except the gut cavity) until dinner time, filleting and skinning at the last minute.
Yeah, pompano are a little extra work for me, but broiled fresh pompano fillet topped with some shrimp and cream sauce ... I love the fresh pompano.

D@mn. Sounds like I am going to miss the pompano season this year. I've got this new job to learn and my boat needs a lot of routine maintenance that has been put off way too long. I'll probably sleep all weekend just to catch up ... you folks go catch some pompano for me.

That's funny--Neither Jax or St Auggie papers weekly fishing report are saying anything about pompano at piers---or anything else for that matter--they say slow, slow, slow.

Re: When Pompano?

I don't know about the piers, but I surf fished about a month ago at Little Talbot and caught 3 pompano but only one was a keeper. I met up with Jack and a few other surf fishers in the parking lot afterwards as we were all leaving and I was the only one that had caught any. It was my first pomp as a matter of fact. Haven't been out since. I can only assume I just got lucky, as is the case for me most of the time when it comes to fishing anyway.

I've only seen one report from a charter captain who caught a pomp at the Mayport jetties about 10 days ago--first one this year. Everything's running late it seems.
